Female and Male Medical Doctors
Medical doctors are the most urgently needed for missions in foreign countries. They have been and still are the backbone of the medical aid programs.
Around one thousand times per year, doctors are recruited for aid work. The majority of them are general medical practitioners, surgeons and anesthesiologists. Presently, there is a large demand for gynecologists/obstetricians. Other specialists in the fields of pediatrics, internal medicine, as well as psychiatry are also needed for missions.
General medical practitioners
The main tasks of general medical practitioners are, on one hand, emergency medicine in crisis locations and on the other hand, basic health care in long-term projects - often in refugee camps or in small local health stations. MSF increasingly carries out vertical programs in order to fight against so-called "neglected diseases" like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, sleeping sickness, and malaria. The central point of all missions is the education and supervision of local personnel. Along with medical activity, data collection and contact with local authorities are also very important.
Special Requirements:
- Completed medical training and two years of professional experience
- Training in tropical medicine or other additional knowledge (Public Health, Epidemiology, Nutrition, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS etc.)
- At least 6 to 12 months of availability for a mission
Surgeons & Anesthesiologists
During their mission, surgeons and anesthesiologists often have to work with the most basic technical equipment and under difficult circumstances. Wide practical experience is necessary. The on-location work of surgeons ranges from emergency surgery and triage to general surgery and perfoming Caesarian sections. Especially for anesthesiologists, having command of "antiquated" working methods and training surgical personnel in hygiene are of importance.
Special Requirements:
- completed medical specialist training
- professional experience, which is as wide-ranging as possible
- at least four weeks of availability for a mission for trauma/ortho surgeons and anesthesiologists
- at least three months of availability for general surgeons
Gynecologists and Obstetricians - urgently needed!
As an OB/GYN on mission with MSF, you will work in one of our projects with reproductive health activities. MSF medical teams provide antenatal care, assist in deliveries, provide prevention of mother-to-child transmission care to HIV-positive mothers, carry out post-rape care for survivors of sexual violence, and perform surgical repair procedures for women with vaginal fistula.
On an MSF mission, your clinical skills and resourcefulness will be put to the test because the health care infrastructure in most of the countries and regions we work in may have fallen apart. As an MSF doctor, you will not be facing this adversity alone, as other MSF team members, both international and national staff, will provide technical back-up, including extensive guidelines and protocols. Along with medical activities, data collection and contact with local authorities are also very important.
Special Requirements:
- completed medical specialist training
- professional experience, which is as wide-ranging as possible – preferably in the field of obstetric surgery
- training or experience in tropical medicine is an asset
- at least 3 months of availability for a mission
Pediatrician
Putting children on the agenda is always welcome at MSF. Adequate health care and treatment for children is not only an ethical imperative, but a right recognized by the countries that signed the UN Convention on The Rights of The Child. As a pediatrician working in the field with MSF, you will work either in a pediatric ward in a hospital, in a program for malnourished children or on a neonatology ward, depending on your previous experiences.
Special Requirements:
- completed medical specialist training
- training or experience in tropical medicine is an asset
- at least 6 to 12 months of availability for a mission
Specialists in HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis – urgently needed!
HIV/AIDS and TB treatment and management are essential components of many MSF projects. As an experienced HIV/AIDS and TB specialist, your knowledge, training, and supervisory skills will help us provide quality care to our patients who live in more than 35 countries. Currently, we are treating over 210,450 people living with HIV/AIDS.
On an MSF mission, your clinical skills and resourcefulness will be put to the test because the health care infrastructure may be weak. As an MSF doctor, you will not be facing this adversity alone, as other MSF team members, both international and national staff, will provide technical back-up, including extensive guidelines and protocols.
The main responsibilities are:
- Treatment and Follow-up of patients
- New case finding
- Implementation of infection control measures
- Data collection and analysis
- Negotiations and collaboration with local health structures
Special Requirements:
- completed medical specialist training
- extensive practical experience in the treatment of HIV/TB patients
- training or practical experience in tropical medicine is an asset
- at least 9 to 12 months of availability for a mission
Epidemiologists
Epidemiologists working with MSF may be called upon to establish surveillance systems for diseases such as cholera or meningitis.
Special Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Epidemiology or in Public Health, with an epidemiological focus
- Proven practical skills in design, implementation and evaluation of surveys and in quantitative/qualitative research methods
- Ability to launch surveillance systems, conduct training, and plan campaigns, such as those to combat epidemics or malnutrition
- Experience with relevant software
- Training or practical experience in tropical medicine is an asset
- At least 6 to 12 months of availability for a mission
Specialists in Emergency Medicine / Internal Medicine / other specializations
As a doctor working for MSF, you may be responding to an outbreak of cholera or meningitis, treating victims in the aftermath of an armed conflict, or even setting up a treatment program for HIV/AIDS or malaria.
The only certainty with an MSF mission is that your clinical skills and resourcefulness will be put to the test in order to deliver medical care to populations in countries and regions where the health care infrastructure may have completely fallen apart. As an MSF doctor, you will not be facing this adversity alone, as other MSF team members, both international and national staff, will provide technical back-up, including extensive guidelines and protocols.
However, specific programs like a Dialysis ward in Iraq or the implementation of an Emergency Room, currently in hospitals in Pakistan and Afghanistan require specialists with very specific skills, such as practical experience in the field of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine or other specialties.
Special Requirements:
- completed medical specialist training
- training or practical experience in tropical medicine is an asset
- willingness to work in unstable contexts
- at least 6 to 12 months of availability for a mission
