We offer

MSF was founded as a volunteer organization and would like to remain that way. However, it is very important to us to offer a minimum package of benefits for field missions.

Contract and insurance

You will receive a work contract from one of the MSF sections for the duration of your field mission. Additionally, we provide an international insurance package, covering health, disability, travel, luggage, accident and medical evacuation, which will also keep you insured for the first few weeks after your return back home.

Attention: Any expenses concerning the application process (eg: travel costs to Vienna) will NOT be reimbursed by MSF!

Salary

MSF salaries are set so as to reflect the humanitarian spirit of volunteerism while recognizing the high level of professional expertise provided by field staff. The monthly gross salary with MSF Austria for the first 12 months on mission is 1485,-€/ month, with subsequent increases based on expertise and work experience. Additionally, MSF covers all related travel costs to the field, provides accommodation as well as a per diem (daily allowance) whilst on mission.

Travel preparation: visa and vaccinations

MSF manages your travel arrangements, visas and work permits and also bears the expenses. Additionally, we reimburse all mission specific vaccinations. Before leaving on a field mission you are furthermore requested to participate in a pre-departure training. This will be organised by and paid for by MSF.

Rest and leave entitlement

In general it is intended that you take regular time to rest during your field mission. Depending on the work load, the duration of your mission and the security situation the planning for both will be done directly in the project.

Psychological care

Every expat working in an emergency situation is exposed to great physical and psychological stress. MSF Austria’s Peer Support Network has been founded to especially meet the needs of returning expats and to offer them confidential emotional support. This network is supported by therapists who train and supervise peers and – if necessary – offer professional help to returning expats.

Career and Training

MSF is committed to the ongoing professional development of its field workers. After the first mission we provide access to various types of training that build skills and knowledge required in the field. Training programs range from language training, to medical, management and leadership trainings.
