The Democratic Republic of the Congo is today in a transition phase. The signature of the Global and Inclusive Agreement on Transition, in Pretoria on December 16, 2002, the nomination of a National Union government and the presentation of an electoral calendar have rekindled hopes of peace and better tomorrows. However, many eastern regions of the country, from Ituri to Katanga, and including Kivu and Maniema, are still in a state of war.
